Hello Gents,

Gotta question on scope rings. Just bought a savage scout and a leopold scout scope. I would like to get a set  of QD rings
but they come in various heights. This is my first scoped rifle and I've read where you want to mount the scope as low as
possible for the best accuracy. As most of you know, the savage comes with a williams peep sight and I want to be able to clear
it when looking thru. What ring height should I get? Thanks for any help you may be able to provide. Ed

to me the peep sight is a back up in case of scope failure
so take it of and just bring it with you when hunting so if scope fails you go back to camp and put on your peep
very rare in the field  the scope fails so put the lowest mount your can
I have poor eyes sight so instead of a peep I have a Aimpoint t1  for back up, for quick shot from early morning till dark it beats a peep hands down.....
if you noticed on the Steyr scout the peep is retractable so not to be in the way of the scope and the scope is mounted low to the barrel....
I admit that it look cool with peep and scope on the rifle at the same time but not functional
high rings you will have a bad cheek contact with your stock
low rings your scope picture will be obstructed by the peep
so the answer is obvious go with low rings and take of the peep..

Thanks Canuck - I really would like to keep them both on the gun - if I remove it I'll  lose it for sure  Tongue. If that means high rings, so be it.  I understand your logic  & what you are saying and appreciate your response. Ed

than it's simple
take the tube diameter of your scope
take the diameter of the eye piece of your scope
subtract the diameter of your scope tube, the result is divided by 2
example tube is 1 inche  eyepiece is 2 inches that gives you 1 inche divided by 2 so we got 1/2 inche
with this measure take a ring that is 1/2 inche from the receiver plus the height of your peep this measurement is taken from the top of the receiver to the bottom of the ring ( where the scope sit's )
let say the peep stick out on the receiver 1/2 inche that means you need ring of 1 inche high (from the top of the receiver to the bottom of the ring)
and that should clear the scope......
don't forget that is the scope is 1/8 from the receiver add this also so your 1 inche become 1 1/8  high rings.....
your scope  eye piece in this case should be 5/8 from the top of the receiver....

Do you want to be able to switch back and forth between the two sight systems without removing the scope?  If so then you will need a set of see thru rings.  However, if you want to use the scope but keep the Williams as a backup for when the scope is removed, then use the QRW rings.

For dimensions of the QRW rings, go to:
http://www.leupold.com/hunting-and-shooting/products/mounting-systems-and-accessories/mounting-systems/qrw-mounts/

Click on ordering info.

The dimension given are the distance from the top of the rail to the centerline of your scope.  Even with the low rings and a forward mounted scope I doubt you will see either the rear or front sight when looking through the scope.

Thanks to all for your help - another member (David Koch) confirmed that the low Leopold QRW will indeed work with the peep sight in place. Now its off to spend sommore cash for my new toy.
