Hey All,

I am about to buy a Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle.  Even though this is a scout rifle forum, I would like to remove the scout rail from the gun and mount a conventional scope on the GSR.  I would use the gun more as a practical rifle/hunting rifle and I would like to remove the rail to lighten up the overall weight.  For this rifle I would prefer a conventional, lightweight variable powered scope rather than a fixed or variable powered scout scope.

I would like to plug the tapped holes for the scout rail to prevent dust and debris from entering.

Does anyone know the the size and thread pitch used for the GSR scout rail?  What sized plug screw should I use for the hole?

Thanks in advance!

Sadly I do not have an answer to your question however I bet a quick call to Ruger would have it cleared up in a hurry, otherwise I am sure one of the more knowledgeable members here will figure it out.  Welcome and I love my RGSR! I think you will as well, great multi purpose rifle.

Actually, Ruger sells plugs for those very holes.  I may get some as I really have no desire to mount a scope on it.  I don't mind the weight, but those edges are just a little too sharp for me.

Cool!  Thanks for the link.

I like that they are hex-head screws rather than a slot screw.

Thanks again everyone for their replies.

I just ordered mine from the Ruger sight.  I too have selected to go with the standard scope mounting method for the current time.  The rail removal will allow for more flexibility with optic size.  Thanks for the Link!!!  Of course, a picture will follow once I get it sorted out.   Wink
